A film screening and live performance

Internationally renowned tap dancer Junior Laniyan presents the rarely seen documentary “No Maps On My Taps”, which tells the story of tap as an expression of black heritage and culture.

The story and spirit of tap in its heyday, shown in rare photographs and Hollywood film clips of the 1930s, provides a backdrop for intimate portraits of three veteran ‘hoofers’, Sandman Sims, Chuck Green and Bunny Briggs.

For all dance afficionados, No Maps on My Taps is an indispensable historical record of this distinctly American art form.

The Screening will be followed by an exciting live tap performance featuring jazz music from The Michele Drees Trio, featuring Patrick Bettison (bass), John Crawford (piano) and Michele Drees (drums).

“The singing body” is more or less the translation of “Kantu Korpu”, from an ancient language still spoken in northern Greece. It is in fact mainly from this area of the country and its traditional rhythms that the ensemble has drawn inspiration for the creation of this project.

Greece is geographically and culturally located between Mediterranean and the Balkans, between East and West, and there lies all the richness of its folk tradition, able to merge all these elements together.

This might constitute already a reason for an artist, born or living in Greece, to be naturally used to contamination and open-minded, able to conceive tradition as something which is not to be preserved in museums, but to be lived and used, even in contemporary and experimental creative directions.

This is exactly the challenge that has been driving on their personal artistic paths, so far, each one of the three members of Kantu Korpu: Yiota Peklari, Thanos Daskalopoulos and Simone Mongelli. And of course it represents the core idea of the project itself: building an innovative show starting from traditional material.

Yiota is a Greek flamenco dancer, Thanos is a Greek tap dancer, and Simone is an Italian percussion player living in Greece: the shaping of their personal languages is based on their deep knowledge and long study of traditional techniques, which they apply to their own individual artistic needs of self-expression, of creative research. Without ever forgetting the deep respect that tradition deserves, they keenly remark.

With Kantu Korpu, their new challenge is a serious one, since their rendering of Greek tradition, or, better, their personal creations inspired by it, are completely made with one and only instrument: the human body!

By clapping, stepping, snapping, singing, beating their bodies, they build a surprising musical effect, where from the primary sources of inspiration they get to a truly outstanding, rich and powerful rhythmic result, where choreographies and a slight touch of humour contribute to the creation of an enjoyable contemporary body music show.

Founded in 2009, Kantu Korpu counts already a good number of collaborations, with Greek bands “Kitrina podilata” and “Musica mista”, with international tap dancers and performers Leela Petronio (from Stomp), Max Pollak (RumbaTap) and Heather Cornell, and appearances in festivals like “Going Youth” in Athens and “TapMotif Rhythm Summit” in Lefkada.
