Heather Cornell Intensive Workshop
Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd November 2007
Zion Centre, 355 Stretford Road, Manchester M15 5ZA.
This is a wonderful and rare opportunity for tap dancers, teachers,
performers and enthusiasts to experience rhythm tap from one of the
world's leading artists. Whether you would like to pick up some steps from
the legendary US Hoofer Eddie Brown or experiment with the musicality of
your own taps or try a different style, come and along and get some fresh
ideas!
Heather Cornell "The Oscar Peterson of Hoofing"
Heather apprenticed to six of the original tap masters and had the rare
honour of having then shared the stage with her mentors. She has been
featured in shows with Cookie Cook, Buster Brown, Chuck Green, Steve
Condos, Eddie Brown, Honi Coles, Jimmy Slyde, The Nicholas Brothers,
Gregory Hines, and Savion Glover.
She established the Manhattan Tap Apprentice Program that is responsible
for training today's generation of tap artists including Max Pollak,
Michael Minery, Roxanne Butterfly, Bob Carrol and Jeannie Hill, as well as
cast members of Manhattan Tap, Stomp, Bring In da Noise, Bring In da Funk,
Tap Dogs, Cool Heat Urban Beat, and Riverdance. She travels extensively,
teaching Master Classes and Residencies throughout the world.

Course 1: Eddie Brown's BS Chorus
Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd 6:30 - 8:00pm
Eddie was Heather's second big influence as a mentor. His "classy tap"
style, which consisted of incredibly complex rhythmic phrases, completely
changed her approach to tap. Eddie always wanted a BS Chorus for rhythm
tappers, a dance that everyone could have at the ready for the end of a
split bill. So he made one. Heather is one of a handful of dancers that he
passed it on to directly, and requested that she teach it to every one of
her students, as a legacy to rhythm tappers everywhere. This material is
suitable for tappers of all levels of experience.
Course 2: Finding your feet
Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd 8:00 - 9:30 pm
Heather's teaching technique blends first hand experience of the Masters
of rhythm tap, whilst also opening up and exploring contemporary
approaches to jazz and world music influences. Learn how to tune your Taps
and find your creative voice through rhythm tap. The focus will be on the
development of tap skills in working with music both improvisationally and
choreographically. You will learn music and tap vocabulary, explore new
arrangement ideas, and will be challenged to develop an individual style
by exploring weight shifts, musical phrasing, aural and visual dynamics,
intonation and counterpoint. Although this class will look at advanced
technique and footwork, it is open to anyone that enjoys a challenge
